iTunes Editors’ Notes

This is a tremendous collection from one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most astonishing singers. It includes more than a dozen singles, their accompanying B-sides, bonus tracks, and a video performance from Holland on March 25, 1965. One should still seek out Orbison’s early work at Sun Records, but the Monument years included his best-known songs such as “Only the Lonely,” “Blue Angel,” “Running Scared,” “In Dreams,” “Blue Bayou” and “Oh, Pretty Woman.” His songs were angst-ridden love songs where a broken heart was a given. The show-stopping arrangements, as complex as anything recorded by Phil Spector but with much more room in the mix, make these songs among the most dramatic in early rock ‘n’ roll. The B-sides are often great. “Love Hurts,” “Distant Drums” and “Beautiful Dreamer” show just how much Orbison defined the era of the early to mid-‘60s. If one is looking for a place to start their Orbison collection, this is an advisable purchase for sure.

This is so Amazing. All of these songs for 19.99. That's incredible. Roy will live on forever in his music.

Great collection of one of the greats

If you have no Roy Orbison, get this. If you have Roy Orbison, get this. There's a reason Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, George Harrison, Mick Jagger, and Emmylou Harris (and many others) were/are fans.

I saw him once, 1965-ish, in of all things a roller skating rink in Boise, Idaho: a wonderful, intimate, memorable show by an unforgettable artist.

NOT THAT GREAT!

IF THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE HIS WORK ON MONUMENTAL RECORDS, WHERE IS "EVERGREEN" AND "LOVE STAR". HOW ABOUT INCLUDING THESE SONGS AND DELETING THE FILLER MATERIAL. JUST SAYIN'

Biography

Born: April 23, 1936 in Vernon, TX

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

Although he shared the same rockabilly roots as Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison went on to pioneer an entirely different brand of country/pop-based rock & roll in the early '60s. What he lacked in charisma and photogenic looks, Orbison made up for in spades with his quavering operatic voice and melodramatic narratives of unrequited love and yearning. In the process, he established rock & roll archetypes of the underdog and the hopelessly romantic loser. These were...
