Classic

I have not heard all of this "complete" recording - it looks like an awful light of filler. My version only has about 6 songs, not 40. But the actual concert that this disk documents was legendary. The remastering of Crescendo in Blue is most welcome and beautifully done. If you're here because you liked Jeep's Blues in American Hustle, do yourself a favor and buy the whole album. It's an American Treasure.

Nerve

The absolute nerve to make pauses and announcements separate tracks and charge .99 for each.....are you kidding me!!

Masterpiece

Duke Ellington was already 30 years into his career and his popularity had begun to wane by the time he brought his band to the Newport Jazz Festival. The performance that night was legendary and reignited his career and popularity for the rest of his life.

The initial album released in 1956 was a recreation of the night because the mikes malfunctioned and most of the solos were lost.

The recordings documented here were unknown for over 30 years, when they were found on a Voice of America reel tape. When paired up with the existing recordings, they document the entire night live for the first time, in stereo. This is remarkable because this is before there was stereo.

The sound quality is superb, the performances are amazing and no jazz collection would be complete without this recording. A prior reviewer complained about the prices, but for $17 you cannot go wrong. The band was so tight, and the enthusiasm from the crowd was so infectious that magic happened and Duke was there leading his band into music history. Buy this recording!

Duke Ellington was the most important composer in the history of jazz as well as being a bandleader who held his large group together continuously for almost 50 years. The two aspects of his career were related; Ellington used his band as a musical laboratory for his new compositions and shaped his writing specifically to showcase the talents of his bandmembers, many of whom remained with him for long periods. Ellington also wrote film scores and stage musicals, and several of his instrumental works...
