The affecting score to a powerful coming-of-age story.
Britell breaks new ground
Nicholas Britell's latest turn composing and conducting for Jenkin's beautiful "Moonlight" is like a gust of starlight and salt from the stretch of ocean that 'Little' stares upon in the film. Each peice in this score is poised and weaved with restraint, allowing themes of intimacy and sensitvity to seep through the issues of masculinty of which the film explores.
Britell breaks new ground with 'Moonlight' by working with a subgenre of music called 'Chopped and Screwed'. This technique involves slowing music down and changing the pitch to create a deep, humming din that results in a huantingly beautiful rendition of Chiron's Theme.
Like the film, Britell's score touches you with a powerful subtlety that draws you in like a camera slowly zooming in on a tear rolling down a cheek.
This movie is the critical darling of 2016 and a likely best picture nom, but the real story is the score. Britell conjures a special kind of soul for this film, effortlessly explaining, without overpowering, the wave of conflicting, uncomfortable emotions that dance around the film. He is careful to hone the sound, only deepening the emotional fulcrum of the story. It's not easy to pull off, which is why this is such an impressive feat.
Saw the film at a film festival and couldn't stop thinking about the score. this brings me right back, very emotional.
