A Sunday dinner for the ears

Featuring an all-star line-up including four of the greats of the era (Morgan, Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean and Hank Mobley), you know from the first few notes of the opening title track that this set is going to be something special. That initial impression turns out to be true, because as you dig further and further into this soul-tinged hard-bop classic, it's clear that this line-up delivers on all the promise that having so many talents on one platter makes. By album's end, every one of the players has gotten the chance to do some great soloing, but never at any point does the ensemble waste time on self-indulgent noodling or lose focus on the songs' melodic structures. So much good stuff here, it's like a Sunday dinner for the ears; there's no need for me to point out which songs are the standouts, because every track is a delight. Highly, highly recommended
