Album Review

The shortest of these four compositions for the Japanese instruments shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and koto (zither) is nearly ten minutes. These pieces stream with tidal grace. It is a very understated, suggested style. Composer Satsuki Odamura knows this in her native tongue as ma . Music to transport you to an oceanic headspace.

Water Spirits Flows Brightly

All I can say is, listen. Listen and learn, the essence of Water Spirits is distilled in the music you will find here. The title of the album is well chosen. Perhaps the artists took months and months, or years, working to capture that essence, to convey it. Certainly the talent is over the top for koto playing in such an extraordinary way as to be able to transport the listener into a higher state. If this is the case, then the lesson is learned, and now I understand why the instrument is so well loved in Japan.

There are people who might accuse me of gushing, but this is not the case here. This is music for the listener/thinker in all of us. So enough talking.

I highly recommend this album.
