Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song (Deluxe)

On his fifth album, troubadour Amos Lee offers an individualistic take on Americana that shifts seamlessly between the introspective and the explosive. The dizzying swirl of the psychedelic roots-rocker "Stranger" and the imposing, bluesy stomp of the apocalyptic "High Water" rub shoulders with easy-rolling, reflective ballads like "Johnson Blvd." and "Chill in the Air." Somehow it all coheres with a deceptive effortlessness. When the slinky, '70s-informed soul-funk of "The Man Who Wants You" ups the groove quotient, the deal is sealed with a sizzle.
