Album Review

Besides being one of the few early British dance albums worth its weight in artistry as well as sound, En-Tact is a truly historical gathering of the cream of the new dance music; mixing and production come from a cast including Paul Oakenfold, William Orbit, Graham Massey, Orbital, Evil Eddie Richards, the Beatmasters, Meat Beat Manifesto, Joey Beltram, Tommy Musto, the Irresistible Force and Caspar Pound. The Shamen fare well also on their own productions, and the singles "Move Any Mountain," "Make It Mine" and "Hyperreal Orbit" are infectious techno-pop anthems, while "Omega Amigo" is an early ambient classic.

Not Quite En-Tact

This version of En-Tact is not the original sadly which included the full thirteen minute version of Evil Is Even and a different track listing. Some of them are here with some new versions of the others. It is a shame that Itunes doesn't have the orginal. RIP Will Sin

A classic album that defined a moment in time for my generation

This album is quite the overlooked and forgotten gem. It defined the style of music that was pumping out of alternative clubs in the early 90's and truly paved the way for so greats to follow. Everyone took a page from this album, from Moby before he broke out on the scene to William Orbit long before producing Madonna's Ray of Light. This album has everything from high energy alternative dance (Move any Mountain & Make It Mine), to the beautiful ambient pulse of Omega Amigo. A gem that was one of the defining moments of early 90's electronica that has aged quite gracefully. Highly recommended and worth revisiting.

The Originals

This was the LP/CD that moved me from alternative club music and electronica through East Coast(NYC) House music into the Raves of South San Francisco. I was younger living on the Peninsula when Raves were known underground as Gotham City's and would pop up in the industrial areas of the S.F. peninsula when a flyer was given to somebody and it was word of mouth only, and inviting the wrong people could get you banned from further Gothams. I went off to college in late 1986, but came home for Summers and the scene was constantly changing. Raves were early 90's and really any kind of music could be played as long as there was a beat and the crowd was dancing. L.A. Style was a electronica group that seemed to be in the direct mold of what the Shamen were all about, tying things up West Coast style. So sad that an accident put this group out of operation, but what they started could "Move any Mountain," defining an era.

Formed: 1986 in Aberdeen, Scotland

Genre: Dance

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Combining swirling psychedelic rock with hardcore hip-hop rhythms, the Shamen were one of the first alternative bands to appeal to dance clubs as much as indie rockers. Comprised of Colin Angus, Peter Stephenson, Keith McKenzie, and Derek McKenzie, the Scottish quartet had its roots in the early-'80s neo-psychedelic group Alone Again Or. The Shamen officially formed in 1986 and released their first album, Drop, the following year. Drop was filled with varying guitar textures, recalling many late-'60s...
