Great Songs, Poor Sound Quality

There are many great tunes on this compilation but the sound quality of these remastered tracks is inferior to the originals. Click on the sample for Superfly or Move On Up here and on the original albums and compare for yourself. I don't know why anyone would remaster a well produced song and leave it sounding worse, but that's what seems to have happened here. Also, Move On Up is not the album version (which is 8 minutes and only sold with the album, Curtis).

Nothings Shocking In These Ol' School Greatest Hits...

Reassembling hits from various collections this album is a Greatest Hits collection of sorts and is a good place to start exploring Mayfield's incredible musical legacy. The song Future Shock was released as a single in 1973 when Mayfield was riding high after scoring Superfly. Other stand out cuts include Kung Fu from 1974's Sweet Exorcist LP whose title cut is also included. No look at Mayfield would be complete without the uplifting Move On Up or cuts like Superfly and of course the funky dark grooves of Freddie's Dead . Get sidetracked with the groovy Tripping Out and others, all of which are remastered with nice bass response & span a diverse section of Mayfield's career. His much acclaimed music carried intellectual & spiritual messages that are seldom heard in today's pop pablum.

This is one of those lost classics

I remember buying this at a music auction back in the late 80's along with curtis Live - the 2 album set. Oh, man, this right here is classic Curtis mayfield. Especially Sweet Exorcist. If you have ever heard the Short eyes sound track, this is right up there with curtis's Street funk style is his crooning voice. A must have.

Perhaps because he didn't cross over to the pop audience as heavily as Motown's stars, it may be that the scope of Curtis Mayfield's talents and contributions have yet to be fully recognized. Judged merely by his records alone, the man's legacy is enormous. As the leader of the Impressions, he recorded some of the finest soul vocal group music of the 1960s. As a solo artist in the 1970s, he helped pioneer funk and helped introduce hard-hitting urban commentary into...
