Album Review

One of the greatest film composers of all time, John Williams has crafted some of the most recognizable scores in cinema history. Paying tribute to the master, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra takes listeners on a tour of the composer's iconic work on Movie Legends: The Music of John Williams. Featuring the themes to classic films like Jaws, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Jurassic Park, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the album provides listeners with just a taste of Williams' stellar body of work, hitting some of the high points with some themes that should be easily identifiable by even the most casual movie fan. With 49 Academy Award nominations to his name, it's hard to fully capture Williams' greatness in just 14 tracks, but with a solid performance and track selection, Movie Legends: The Music of John Williams makes a commendable attempt.

Indelibly linked to its founder, Sir Thomas Beecham, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is considered one of the four major orchestras based in London. Established in 1946 in connection with the Royal Philharmonic Society, the orchestra's title was directly approved by King George VI. Although it has often had to fight for its survival, the RPO remains one of the busiest ensembles in Great Britain. The orchestra annually offers a set of concert series in three London venues (Royal Festival Hall,...
