Guilty pleasure

I know the entire set of these sonatas are belittled, partially because of Glenn Gould's aversion to the composer, but mostly because of the style in which he plays them. My first Mozart sonata I played at 14 was a minor, my piano teacher made me tape of Gould playing it and told me to listen to it so I would know not how to play Mozart. However, Gould offers an interesting perspective and insight into Mozart's music language, giving a fresh outlook. This set is not for the casual listener, or for someone who does not know these sonatas well. This is for listening with the scores and studying, and then listening to a more traditional version with the scores (i.e. Uchida) and compare. Gould's execution of ornaments and clear cut way of playing make it sound as if these pieces are being played on a fortepiano more than the modern piano, they are vivacious and youthful. But for a pianist...a guilty pleasure.

The Highest Standard!

No one compares to Glenn Gould's Complete Mozart Piano Sonatas. Walter Giesking, Vladimir Horowitz—no one. Gould has the texture and tone that brings out the beauty found in these eighteen delicate sonatas. Melodically each of the sonatas sing, but their harmonies are at one with the melting motifs. Mozart sounds like himself, not like early Beethoven. Gould's performance proves it. Enjoy their enchantment!

The worst Mozart recording ever!!!

Years Active: '40s, '50s, '60s, '70s, '80s

The most renowned Canadian classical performer of the 20th century, pianist Glenn Gould remains one of the most fascinating and celebrated figures in all of music, the archetypal riddle wrapped inside an enigma wrapped inside a conundrum. A former child prodigy, his piano artistry was unparalleled, yet he often received less recognition as a virtuoso than as a troubled eccentric; a disconnected recluse notorious for such odd habits as wearing a wool topcoat in the dog days of summer, Gould was a...
