Definitive recording

I went with this recording becuse the soprano nails it on the gorgeous aria Et Incarnatus est. By contrast, Kiri Te Kanawa overpowers the delicacy of Mozart's composition on her recording with Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, where the tempo of the aria is lagubriously slow -- a full 1:07 longer than the version heard on Christopher Hogwood's recording with the Academy of Ancient Music, where the tempo sounds too fast. Alternatively, the much bigger sound of the chorus and instruments on Deutsche Grammophon's recording with Leonard Bernstein was my go-to version for years, but now I prefer to hear this work stripped down to its essence, which John Eliot Gardiner and the English Baroque Soloists do beautifully. For me, this is the definitive recording of Mozart's Great Mass in C Minor.
