Well sung set

This set, originally released in the mid-90's is a good set, and although has some unorthodox tempos, is fairly well cast. Sylvia McNair is a definitive Susanna, she has attitude and a beautiful lyric soprano voice that is well suited for the role. We also have Cecilia Bartoli in her only complete portrayal of Cherubino on record. Cecilia's Cherubino is lively, vivacious and was recorded fairly early in her career. Really, this set is worth it for McNair and Bartoli alone! Gallo plays Figaro playfully and is refreshing in the role. The rest of the cast is fairly hum-drum. Cheryl Studer, although works well in some roles is a fairly boring Countess Rosina; Skovhus as the Count is also sung well, but like Studer, he sounds bored. I give this set 4 stars mainly because of Cecilia and Sylvia…they're worth it.
