In the Wake

In the Wake

Though San Francisco's Tea Leaf Green started its career as a jam band, its members have become master craftsmen at writing songs and complementing them with just the right instrumental accompaniment. 2013's In the Wake is the sound of a band growing together and getting past personal tragedy. The songs were written as therapy for the band and feature a binding message of living through grief that gives songs such as "All Our Love" and "In the Wake" a somber undertow. While circumstances of the past few years have forced this self-proclaimed party band to grow up beyond "Sex in the '70s," there's still a joyous groove to be had in the mild reggae and soul of "Give Me One More Chance." Drummer Scott Rager knows how to lock with bassist Reed Mathis, and together they ensure the band can do anything it sets out to accomplish, whether it's the FM radio rock of "One Condition's Enough" or the spaced-out and experimental "Two Parts."
