Michael Kamen's music for Mr. Holland's Opus bears more weight and relevance to its accompanying motion picture than your rank-and-file Hollywood score. The tale of a high-school music teacher who juggles everyday life with his grander creative pursuits, culminating in his three-decades-in-the-making "An American Symphony," its central themes double as the Holland character's own compositions, serving not only the film's emotional aspirations, but its narrative demands as well. Kamen draws liberally from classical antecedents, incorporating elements of Beethoven's "7th Symphony" and Bach's "Concerto for Three Harpsichords in C."
Great Work for a Great Movie
I like Michael Kamen's work, and this was very satisfying. It's nice to hear all of "An American Symphony" (which this version has 5 minutes of additional music over what was played in the movie, and a nice touch). I have the other soundtrack from the movie (with the pop tunes from the movie), it's great to hear the other music from the movie as well. Other than "An American Symphony", this may not be the most recognizable of Mr. Kamen's work, but it is still good, IMHO.
the music filled my heart with inspiration it really brought the movie together.
I love Mr. Holland's Opus with a passion. I'm 16 and found it so inspiring. We watched it in band many times. It is a wonderful movie and a beautiful soundtrack. 5 stars. I highly recommend every musician and anyone who just loves music to watch the movie and buy the soundtrack.
