iTunes Review

Erick Sermon and Redman rejoin forces for the Newark, NJ-based rapper’s third album of punch lines, similes, and rah-rah rhymes. Redman flips hardcore hip-hop funk with roguish energy on “Pick It Up” and “Case Closed” and slips into easy repartee with frequent rhyme partner Method Man on “Whateva Man.” Muddy Waters is a “funkorama” of boom-bap entertainment, complete with goofy skits—like an interview with a “Soopaman Luva” bragging about his bedroom prowess—as well as sharpshooting cameos from Def Squad crew's Keith Murray and Jamal on “Da Ill Out.”

Muddy Waters - the best album from Funk Doc!

To hip hop fans all around the world (new and old)... COP this. This album is one of those dirty Jersey, wildin out in a stolen car, high as a light bill, aint hardly gonna beat the sun home classics! Just check Doc out on his MTV Cribs episode (dirtiest crib you ever seen), and you'll know how he gets down.

Classic Funk Doctor

F all the talk about who holdin down eastcoast rap. Redman did this himself with this classic album. Only Red can take some of the most raw hiphop beats and turn thenm into music that gets you going and keeps you on that natural high and the smoke influenced high.

A Classic Album, Period

Redman reached his pinnacle on this album, perfectly his style of witty lyrics, funky beats and charisma that many have tried matching but failed. Not that his later releases weren't great, but this album is probably the best representation of Funk Doctor Spot at his prime. In today's hip hop, you have many artists doing rap music that can't rap. Redman was your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. He could take the most ridiculous rhymes and make it work. He had punchlines that were untouched by his contemporaries. Every track on this album features Redman tearing up the English language and brining punchlines that sent a whole generation of MCs back to the lab. Eminem, Ludacris, and Mac Dre all created their style around Redman. This album also features the introduction to the chemistry Method Man & Redman shared on the mic, on Whateva Man. From start to finish this album is flawless. Its too bad hip hop doesn't get records like this one anymore.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Never quite a superstar, Redman was nonetheless one of the most off-the-wall, beloved, and enduring rappers of the '90s and 2000s. Born Reginald Noble in Newark, NJ, he made his initial impact on EPMD's 1990 album Business as Usual and stepped out as a solo artist with 1992's Whut? Thee Album, one of the year's best debuts, rap or otherwise. He blended reggae and funk influences with topical commentary and displayed a terse though fluid vocal style that was sometimes satirical, sometimes silly, and...
