Album Review

Although still best known for his association with Chick Corea, drummer Dave Weckl has led an underrated group of his own for quite a few years. His core band, a quartet with keyboardist Steve Weingart, electric bassist Tom Kennedy, and saxophonist Gary Meek, is a little reminiscent of the Yellowjackets in its use of catchy melodies and appealing grooves and its ability to perform post-bop jazz with the sensibility of rock. Weckl does not dominate the music and gives Meek and Weingart plenty of solo space. His band deserves to be heard, and Multiplicity is an excellent example of the quartet at its best.

Customer Reviews

Sweet music.

For drummers, Dave Weckl is one of the gods. His solid cowbell patterns mixed in with some funk beats make for great, sexy music. It's not only the drumming, the music is tremendous all around. The alto saxophone mixed with the jazzy guitar makes the music sound fresh. This album prooves that Weckl is more than just a drummer.

Where would the state of Fusion be without Weckl.

Weckl consistently puts together great players and great composistions. And this is no exception. Compared to the same band live, the musicians play it a little bit safe during their solos.

Great Stuff

I've been inspired by Dave for many years and when I got to hear this album I was blown away! My favorite track has to be Chain Reaction. Has this cool fill at the end (at 5:13) that makes me smile every time I hear it! Keep up the great work, Dave. Can't wait for the next one.

Weckl was born in St. Louis and grew up listening to soul and jazz; he received his first drum set at age eight and developed his playing by listening to drummers like Buddy Rich, as well as R&B grooves. He majored in jazz at the University of Bridgeport, but left after two years to become involved in the New York jazz scene, also touring Europe with various bands. Weckl joined a fusion...
