For Music for Listening to Music To, La Sera enlisted alt-country icon Ryan Adams as producer. And from the raucous beginning and twangy splash of “High Notes,” the album is a sepia-toned Golden State gem. The California group’s sparkling indie pop—elevated by Katy Goodman’s gorgeous girl-group vocals—proves a perfect complement to both Adams’ roots rock pedigree (see: the dark shuffle of “Shadow of Your Love”) and his long-standing love of The Smiths (on the stormy melodrama of “Begins to Rain”).

La Sera began as the dreamy pop songwriting vehicle for Brooklyn bassist Katy Goodman of noise pop band Vivian Girls, then shifted styles from punk to alt-country as she progressed.
