Dopeness

I don't buy albums often but I had to cop this one. Gotta support real lyricists who put out music that I bump. Big ups to Skyzoo.

Classic

Sky... You did it again... That's 3 classics. You keep bringing us back that good ol' New York hip hop. Thank you!

Return of the real

Skyzoo returns with his third official album - like Dream Deferred, it is heavily autobiographical, inspired by his own experiences growing up in Brooklyn.

This is a mature, intelligent album that is cohesive and heavily themed.

Skyzoo continues to evolve and mature musically, and this album trumps even Dream Deferred in terms of musicality. Every beat is a slickly produced and jazz-influenced, and the album is extremely easy to listen to, with zero missteps in beat selection. Just gorgeous, lush beats, one after another.

His heavily codified lyrics will be familiar to long-time fans, and one of the joys of any Skyzoo offering is listening to it a few dozen times to get the hundreds of references and turns of phrase. Having only listened to the album once, I have just started scratching the surface. However, it's easy to tell I'll be listening to this for weeks to come.

Skyzoo creates quality, cohesive albums. Guest verses are kept to a minimum here, with two heavyweights and one up-and-comer bringing the heat. I'm always 'meh' on the newcomers, but hearing Black Thought and Skyzoo on the same track was a hallmark moment for me - two of my favorite rappers of all time. Knowing Jadakiss was a big influence on Sky as well (self-proclaimed owner of "fourth member of the Lox flow"), that track is especially important.

This album is dope. You need it. There is more care and artistry in this than you'll find in any other album of 2015 so far.

Aside from his rhyming skills and bright prospects, Skyzoo was once known most for his loss to fellow rapper Jin on BET's 106 & Park freestyle contest. Nonetheless, the New York MC launched his career by landing theme tracks for ESPN and Guinness beer, building his own Custom Made Entertainment company, and securing a relationship with North Carolina rap crew the Justus League. The Brooklynite was born Justin Taylor on December 24, 1982, in Crown Heights but spent much of his youth just south of...
