Mark Oliver Everett, a.k.a. E, a.k.a. Eels, is one dark pop tunesmith. On the surface, there is a familiar accessibility to his melodies and a professional and assured shine to his musical arrangements. However, much like a David Lynch movie, where normalcy only serves to dramatically shade the darkness, Everett’s music is the sound of a solitary man battling his personal demons and impulses in broad daylight. “Novocaine for the Soul,” “My Beloved Monster,” “Beautiful Freak,” “Mental,” and “Your Lucky Day in Hell” should clearly warn onlookers that the trip through the Tunnel of Love is likely to be a horror show, yet Everett’s demure vocals and gently coaxing keyboard lines suggest a well-insulated life and not a bare-knuckled fight to the finish. Yet that’s what’s happening between the ancient keyboard tones, music box touches and the heavily manipulated vocal effects where he sounds like he’s transmitting from another galaxy. In another’s hands a track like “Manchild” might be a tearjerker, a plea for sympathy, but here it’s an admission of guilt and a defiant refusal to ever grow up.

One of the Top 5 Albums of the 90's

I tracked this album down in 1997 after hearing Novicane for the Soul playing under the titles of the movie Dreams for an Insomniac. What I got was one the ten best albums Ive ever listened too. I actually wore out a copy of this on CD when I was in college. If your looking to just grab the highlights; Novicane for the Soul, Rags to Rags, Beautiful Freak, Mental and Spunky are all songs not to missed.

Awesomley dark

Eels' debut album, "Beautiful Freak", is a dark and very experimental album. It has no real rhyme or reason, but it is great because of that. Check out the gloomy "Novocaine for the Soul" and the strangely infectious "My Beloved Monster". Also, take a look at "Susan's House" for more odd lyrical choices.

Better with every listen.

I bought this album in '96 when it first came out, after hearing the single "Novocaine for the Soul" on the radio. Over the last ten years it has become one of my favorite albums of all time. The songs are all just amazing. "Guest List" "Flower" and "Spunky" are especially moving tunes. E is an incredible lyricist and I truely believe every time I listen to this album I get something new out of it. Its the perfect album for a rainy day.

Although Eels are often marketed as a full-fledged band, singer/songwriter E (real name: Mark Oliver Everett) is responsible for the group's sound and direction. Born in Virginia on April 9, 1963, Everett became interested in rock music at an early age via his sister's record collection, and began playing drums at the age of six, as well as tinkering on his family's piano. As the years progressed, Everett found himself leading a troubled teenage life, which was further complicated by his father's...
