My Fair Lady 2018

modified rapture. Eliza looks older than Higgins. A sad and miscast Alfred Doolittle, terrible set, mis directed Ball gown scene, cut entreact music for a stunt. Sad, but not pathetic production. Cordunder would have been a great Higgins.

Absolutely gorgeous

This is simply a stunning recording of this delicious score. Yes, its hard to move aside memories of the indelible performances by Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews (and Stanley Holloway!) but teach and every track is a delight. The orchestra is spectacular and the Overture gave me chills. Lauren Ambrose is a wonderful surprise. 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly' is perfection. Harry Hadden-Paton brings some freshness and youth to Higgins. Jordan Danica's 'On the Street Where You Live' is my favorite of all the Freddy's I've heard. And again, I can't stress how amazing the quality of the recording is. Whether you know this show or have other recordings, this is a MUST have.

Wonderful recording captures a terrific revival

I saw the original “My Fair Lady” as a little boy, and the music and gorgeous Cecil Beaton sets and costumes, not to mention the performances of Sally Ann Howes and Edward Mulhare who had inherited the leading roles, enchanted me. Since then I’ve seen a few professional productions of this classic musical, but none of them approached the freshness and energy of this 2018 Lincoln Center revival.

The great surprise of the production is the miraculous performance of Lauren Ambrose as Eliza. Her acting was extraordinary as was her singing, which is captured here. Julie Andrews may have memorably created this role, but Ambrose’s nuanced and lovely soprano is equally striking. Harry Haden-Patton is a much more attractive and younger Higgins than Rex Harrison, and a much better singer. Frankly, although I love Norbert Leo Butz, I find his Doolittle very good, but not up to the level of Ambrose and Haden-Patton. Nonetheless, the quality of these performances and of this recording with a full orchestra is first rate. This is a revival with owning.
