iTunes Editors’ Notes

By 1985 the music world had finally caught up to Nico's unusual style, with gothic groups citing her as a major influence and new wave and alternative groups adopting her minimalist style to their own material (though in more accessible ways). Capitalizing on this rediscovery, Nico and former producer John Cale collaborated for the first time since 1974's The End. "My Funny Valentine" is perfect: a piano torch ballad sung with Nico's Germanic tone and enunciation. Elsewhere, The Faction adds synth and drum machine–heavy arrangements that align with Nico's permanent sense of alienation. "Das Lied Einsanen Madchens" was a masterstroke, a hypnotic German ballad that expresses the tension of the tune that follows, the equally paranoid "Fearfully in Danger." "Konig" (originally recorded for Desertshore) is resurrected as a classic Nico-with-harmonium piece. It was to be her final studio album and, like all her work, a unique experience. She died three years later.

Customer Reviews

Nicos best

This album is the last piece she left us, before she passed away. "Camera Obscura" stands for " dark chamber " in spanish, so the dark tones of this album best signifies the album title. "Tanamore" she gives us a chilling vocal performance, while "My heart is Empty" is synthesized masterpiece. With no new more work from her, This is a brillant gift to have left for us to hear over and over again.

MASTERPIECE

As great as MARBLE INDEX. This is music only Nico could have made. BUY IT!

Cale/Nico : A Perfect Match

Camera Obscura is other-worldly and heartbreaking at the same time. Nico is a legend in her own right, but John Cale's had a big hand in producing this little masterpiece. It's a shame she died so relatively young—on the other hand, how else could such a tragic artist die?

Biography

Born: October 16, 1938 in Cologne, Germany

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s

One of the most fascinating figures of rock's fringes, Nico hobnobbed, worked, and was romantically linked with an incredible assortment of the most legendary entertainers of the '60s. The paradox of her career was that she herself never attained the fame of her peers, pursuing a distinctly individualistic and uncompromising musical career that was uncommercial, but wholly admirable and influential. Nico first rose to fame as a European supermodel, also landing a bit part in Fellini's La Dolce Vita...
