real music

upon hearing a song from his first album, championship boxing, i immediately headed for the nearest brick n mortar store to buy it. my impression of the first album was it sounded like the beatles meeting tears for fears in a very well done collision. melody and texture had returned to the radio. i'm still enjoying the first album and now have begun to enjoy the new better for the metaphor. the latest seems just a bit more subtle musically. the lyrics have expanded from personal connections with his surroundings into a broader view of the world. what is amazing is he's managed to insidiously conceal it in a candy wrapper that will allow you to enjoy the album repeatedly. good music does that rather than the throwaway exhuberance of love at first listen. having had the opportunity to see him perform in person i can say that live he adds a more pointed delivery that drives the intention of the lyrics home. it was like having a painting explained by the artist.

Absolutely Brilliant! Can't stop listening to this album from start to finish. There's no filler here, every song stands on its own merits. As soon as I think I've found my "favorite", another song vies for the title. "Go Getter" is such a fun, beat-driven romp. And "Long Way Home" is quite possibly the most artfully subtle critique of our current political situation that I've heard. This album won't disappoint and definitely merits continued listening. (Same can be said of Cantinero's first album "Championship Boxing" in case you missed it.)

this is one of the best albums i've heard in a while everyone should go and buy it

Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Hicken fell in love with America -- especially the American audience -- when he brought his band Bigmouth to the States in 1993. It was only a two-week tour but the positive response to his band made Hicken itchy to return. He got his chance when Bigmouth was offered a support...
