Album Review

Ultimate Petula Clark is a 21-track collection of British songbird Clark's biggest hits and best songs from the early '60s through the early '70s. Her sophisticated and warm voice was the perfect instrument for the songwriting talents of Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent; many of the songs here are written and produced by the underrated Hatch. The collection leads off with her biggest hit, "Downtown," and includes great songs like "I Know a Place," "Call Me," "Sign of the Times," and "Don't Sleep in the Subway." She split with Hatch in the late '60s and some of the songs she recorded after the split are here: "Kiss Me Goodbye," "The Song Is Love," and "Neon Rainbow," a great track from Memphis, the oft-overlooked classic record that she cut with Chips Moman in 1970. Along with the great music and a very generous track listing, the collection boasts remastered sound and extensive liner notes, making Ultimate Petula Clark the best single-disc Petula Clark disc on the market.

Customer Reviews

Simply great music.

The Ultimate Petula Clark is something every collector should consider – especially, those who lived through her early days. This album contains, not only iconic music of the 60’s and early 70’s, it has something for those who enjoy soft rock and jazz. Petula’s voice is so smooth that you’ll soon find your self day-dreaming about those golden days when nothing else mattered but the sound coming from your pocket sized transistor radio. If you don't have at least some of her hallmark tunes, then you are missing out on something that is simply great music. Mitch

ther are true jems on this album, downtown,of course, but some often overlooked songs that reflect an era that was much mired in war and cultural upheaval."i know a place","a sign of the times","i couldn't live without your love","dont sleep in the subway" are the consumate petula clark songs.the rest i consider well intentioned but terribly dated...like polyester.

Feel Good Music

Petula Clark is truely one of a kind. Whenever I need a lift of spirits, I just reach for "Downtown" and I'm sure to be smiling within a few moments of hearing her voice. She has a wonderful style of singing, and the mixture of songs on this CD is fantastic. This is a must buy... You Won't Regret It.
