Studio Master - Many Layers of Gorgeous Tones and Melodies.

Michael Thompson might not be a familiar name for the fusion/shred fan or the casual fan of instrumental rock guitar. The reason being that he dedicated most of his career on being a successful STUDIO guitarist. In fact, one of the most successful of all time! His playing graces many, many hit recordings. He's one of those cats (Michael Landau, Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr.) that you hear everywhere in a daily basis, without even realizing...It comes with the job. From all this studio experience comes a refined ear for tone, and also for playing with taste, respecting the needs of each tune. This record has it all, from gorgeous ballads, eastern-sounding rockers and even more traditional sounding ones. There's even a quote from Dance of Maya from John Mclaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra in one of the heavier tunes! This recording touches many bases, and Michael Thompson shows his unique stylings throughout. His technique is immaculate, but never excessive. The record flows very naturally and the playing from the whole band is note-perfect. It's also impressive how many guitar tones are layered on each tune. Very well arranged. I hope he records solo records more frequently, cause Michael Thompson is definitely one of those underrated masters. Very Highly recommended! Fans of Jeff Beck, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson (or any other great guitarists that put melody first, for that matter) will find a lot to like here. PS: Like his previous solo record ("The World According...), this one features again a hideous cover art that might give the casual listener a bad impression (cheap home-made recording?). Far from it, this is a gorgeous sounding, VERY WELL PRODUCED album!
