iTunes Review

Often feted as one of the most talented jazz singers of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater is also indisputably one of the most stylistically adventurous. In her early career she fearlessly stormed the pop market, and in recent years she’s released soul-jazz and Afropop crossover albums and helmed tributes to figures as diverse as Kurt Weill, Billie Holiday, and Horace Silver. Yet throughout all these stylistic digressions Bridgewater has stayed firmly rooted in the jazz tradition; this side of Bridgewater’s art is highlighted by Midnight Sun, a release collecting remarkable Bridgewater interpretations of jazz standards recorded between 1993 and 2010. Bridgewater proves equal to her source material throughout Midnight Sun, particularly on her memorable reading of Silver’s classic ballad “Lonely Woman” and Johnny Mercer’s “Midnight Sun,” which Bridgewater performs with enough strength and imagination to rival Ella Fitzgerald’s immortal 1957 interpretation.

Dee Dee

Dee Dee Bridgewater is back with a collection of songs from six of her previous CD's "Dear Ella", "Love and Peace: A Tribute to Horace Silver", "Keeping Tradition", "This is New", "J'Ai Deux Amours", and "Eleanora Fagan (1915-195):To Billie with Love from Dee Dee" but nevertheless it's a great collection of songs.

Dee Dee's Love Ballad Collection is Great

One of today's premier jazz singers, Dee Dee is superb on this collection of ballads from previous recordings. "Midnight Sun", "The Island", "Angels Eyes", "Que Reste-t-il" (I Wish You Love), "Lonely Woman", "Good Morning Heartache", Edith Piaf's ultimate love song "L'Hymne A L'Amour (in French and English) and "Here I'll Stay" are wonderful.

One of the best jazz singers of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater had to move to France to find herself. She performed in Michigan during the '60s and toured the Soviet Union in 1969 with the University of Illinois Big Band. She sang with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis orchestra (1972-1974) and appeared in the Broadway musical The Wiz (1974-1976). Due to erratic records and a lack of direction, Bridgewater was largely overlooked in the jazz world by the time she moved to France in the '80s. She appeared...
