Album Review

Released on the eve of the 20th anniversary of Presley's death, Platinum: A Life in Music attempts to trace an alternative history of Elvis' career by concentrating on alternate takes and unreleased material. Over the course of four discs, 23 hit singles are interspersed with 77 previously unreleased items. The hits function as touchstones, so the listener has an idea of where Elvis was in his career when he was recording such unreleased gems as a 1966 cover of "Blowin' in the Wind" or the 1959 "Bad Nauheim Medley." Certainly, the sheer amount of unreleased material means that Platinum: A Life in Music is targeted at hardcore collectors, but what is surprising is how listenable the set is, even for casual fans. The homemade recordings and demos are occasionally sonically rough, but the rarity of these items make the sound a moot point. Some of the performances aren't particularly remarkable — alternates of "Always on My Mind" and "Heartbreak Hotel" simply sound like the released versions, only not as good — but there's an abundance of gems scattered throughout the set, making it worthwhile for any serious Elvis collector.

It seems to be one of the most comprhensive elvis presley compilations. I reccommend this to all true fans who are not looking for simply entertainment but for a man. It touches the most obscure recordings, one of personal favorites is "Blowin in the Wind" and currently is my rigtone, and the alternate takes of his most famous songs. This set is not reccommended for someone who just bought their first "30 #1 hits" album, but for all of you young(i'm 14) and old who want to hear elvis as the person please, please buy this cd set.

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not necessarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularizing rock & roll on an international level. Viewed in cold sales figures, his impact was phenomenal. Dozens upon dozens of international smashes from the mid-'50s to the mid-'70s, as well as the steady sales of his catalog and reissues since his death...
