Naam

Naam

This Brooklyn trio nails down a heavy krautrock groove that trips out to the psychedelic edges of the universe. While channeling Hawkwind's space-is-the-place ambitions, Naam creates its own freakout that reverberates beyond the studio walls. Said to have been recorded at an abandoned dairy farm in the Catskill Mountains, Naam plays like a horror film heavy on isolation. "Kingdom" is the opening tour de force; it's an expanded version of the title track from its previous EP, where Middle Eastern drones meet slippery sitar-like melodies with a Black Sabbath punch lying in wait. "Skyling Slip" works off a Sabbath-like grind and expands it into a fuzz-driven wail. "Fever If Fire" and "Black Ice" add a reverb so dominating that the vocals sound like they were recorded at the bottom of a well. The production sounds vintage without resorting to retro kicks or shtick. They're aiming to bring heavy music into the new century by remaining true to the power of the riff and the chord.
