Dimitrova Rules!

There aren't a whole lot of good Nabucco recordings, but this one basically selects itself on the basis of Dimitrova's Abigaille alone. She recalled at one point being under par during the recording sessions, but it is difficult to tell here. She dominates the way the role should, both in ensemble and in her solo moments. Needless to say she is thrilling (the last high C of her cabaletta will give you chills!) and this recording is a fitting memorial to her, especially in light of how seldom she recorded. Sinopoli seems focused on creating an impression, but that often results in being either fussy or irrelevant with predictable consequences for the orchestra and chorus. Cappuccilli is a master of acting with the voice, although here the voice sounds a bit dry and faded - not inappropriate for the part, but ever-so-slightly disappointing nonetheless. Domingo is forgettable in such a small role and Valentini-Terrani is simply miscast - a waste of a wonderful artist. The Muti recording is better conducted, but his singers (Scotto, Manuguerra) are stretched to their limits, and the Gardelli recording is good with more variable singers (Souliotis, Gobbi). Until we get another artist of Dimitrova's caliber, I think this recording will be the one to have.

From 1969 to 1973, he attended the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena, studying under Franco Donatoni. He graduated with his doctorate of medicine in psychiatry and a PhD...
