Album Review

Hailing from Tempe, AZ, the Refreshments launched their short-lived career as a solid frat boy band, and Fizzy, Fuzzy, Big & Buzzy captures that period with muscled guitar riffs and strong vocals. Though much of this debut is about alcohol, Mexico, and girls (topics that the band later revisited on 1997's The Bottle & Fresh Horses, albeit with a stronger southwestern influence), the album also sports a sense of humor and lack of pretension that helped make the Refreshments minor stars. Listening to "Girly" or "Banditos," the album's flagship single, is like kicking back with a college bud and a brew: summery, smirky, and somewhat yearning. The irreverence in the Refreshments' lyrics makes all the difference between them and other increasingly self-serious bands in the same vein. All the anguished grunge and post-grunge posing got old fast — and with clever lyrics, solidly melodic guitar work, and Roger Clyne's marketable voice, the Refreshments kept fun alive on the alternative scene throughout the decade's latter half.

Endlessly Enjoyable

This album ranks up near the top of my all-time favorites. It's so fun to listen to and I can relate to the songs in so many different ways. If you're in need of just kicking back to some awesome tunes and want to block out the meaning of the lyrics, you can. If you're feeling down and need some uplifting words of wisdom, you can listen closer. I've never found an album that has kept my attention the whole way through as much as this one. From the first note to the last, you can tell that Roger Clyne put something special together. There is some great and diverse songwriting here, with songs that range from the "Carefree" to topics of love, lust, drinking, lonliness, and even goofball bandits. Check out the hit single, Banditos, and you'll know how it feels to have your "cold, black, sun-cracked" soul "come alive!"

One of my favorite albums of all-time

I usually like middle-eastern folk rap and ska metal but this is the greatest!!! Seriously, it's a top 10 album of mine for sure and it shares that ranking with the likes of Johnny Cash and the Stones... so it's in good company. Like someone else said, this CD feels like an old friend anytime I put it on. A desert island disc, a party disc, a driving disc... just get it if you like easy going rock that doesn't weigh heavily on the mind or the soul in a negative way. This album is the aural equivalent of the smile you'd smile after taking a shot of good tequila and kissing a pretty southwestern girl you just met.

The best there is

This is the that started it all. Although the The Refreshments were short lived, Roger Clyne (The lead singer) has continued to keep rocking. Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers are the kick off of the Refreshments. If you have not kept up with Roger, I suggest you ckeck them out. I think that they grown and continue to make the southern rock there is. Please listen for self, and if you ever have the chanc go see them live, fantastic, borderline, Amazing. The best show is in Rocky Point, that south of the border.

Biography

Formed: 1993 in Tempe, AZ

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

Although the Gin Blossoms were Tempe, AZ's most recognizable band in the post-grunge era, the Refreshments were perhaps the town's hometown favorite. Their alternative pop/rock sound owed much to the band's Southwestern surroundings, whose influence played a big role on the band's sophomore effort, The Bottle & Fresh Horses, and later came to fruition with the spin-off Americana outfit Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers. Oddly enough, the very elements that endeared the Refreshments to their hometown...
