Although the ‘70s were in full swing when Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazlewood released this sequel to their highly influential 1968 album of duets, Nancy & Lee Again still sounds steeped in the ‘60s. And while this one doesn’t contain any moments as magical as “Some Velvet Morning” or the duo’s salty take on “Jackson,” their chemistry is more solidified here and executed with restraint – even in the haunting narrative of “Arkansas Coal,” where Sinatra sings the part of a young girl searching for her trapped miner father, their tasteful performance over campy go-go horns and surfy guitar keeps the tune from completely turning into kitschy melodrama. “Big Red Balloon” finds the duo returning to divorcee twang trimmed with well-arranged countrypolitan flourishes. Sinatra and Hazlewood return to fusing elegant baroque pop with classic Nashville production on a cinematic sounding cover of Dolly Parton’s “Down From Dover,” where the burning urgency in Sinatra’s emotional performance totally overshadows the incongruous sitar notes. The remastered treatment gives Nancy & Lee Again the intimacy of listening to playbacks in a studio control room.
