Pat Flynn is the music man

If you are among the legions of fans who thought Pat Flynn was outta sight as guitarist with New Grass Revival twenty years ago, check him out now. reVision reinforces Flynn's gift for knowing how to pick an eclectic, yet connected, set of material ... and just the right studio musicians to pull it all together. A consummate artist, Flynn coaxes his fingers to fly with elegant confidence over his six-string. His vocals demonstrate commanding delivery and, coupled with his playing, are often reminiscent of Clapton, particularly on such rockin' blues numbers as Ledbetter's "National Defense Blues," where Jim Hoke blows us away with hardcore harmonica. Ditto when it comes to handling Dylan's "Highway 61." reVision seamlessly weaves Flynn's guitar work in and out of subdued, as well as fifth-gear rock sensibilities, high-end bluegrass and country. Experience "All Along The Watchtower" a la New Grass Revival, complete with former bandmate John Cowan on bass, banjo phenom Noam Pikelny and fiddle whiz Luke Bulla. Cowan also contributes harmony vocals, including on "This Heart Of Mine," revived from the NGR catalog, and on a Flynn original, "Better Let It Go Now," packed with signature drive. "Father Time," written with Tim May, is a sensitively constructed heartbreak song that would serve a country star well to record. May's "King Of Babylon" offers a dose of newgrass gospel, with assistance on backing vocals from The Isaacs. Steve Goodman's classic, "Looking For Trouble," is a renewed treasure in Flynn's hands (and voice). In a nod to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Flynn gives us Jim Ibbotson's breezy "Sarah In The Summer." But the album highlight is "Wayfaring Stranger," an exquisite, full-bodied tapestry. Pat Flynn is the music man. reVision is jam-packed with incredible talent and drive, worthy of an arena stage. - STEPHANIE P. LEDGIN, SingOut! Magazine
