Album Review

Following up her excellent 2002 debut, Sharon Jones stays true to the formula she laid down on her early releases and Dap Dippin' by presenting another session of full-force funk that pays homage to the genre's glory years without coming off as contrived. The deep funk revival continues with Jones belting out commanding vocal performances that are uncompromisingly forceful yet full of rich, soulful emotion. It's a session worthy of being found in any beat-miner's record collection and any funk enthusiast's basket of obscurities and rarities. Her cover of "This Land Is Your Land" is equally as impressive, as she somehow takes the song from being an American folk standard and turns it into a full-on sonic explosion. Fans of her earlier work will no doubt find great joy in this follow-up, and those seeking Jones out for the first time certainly will not be disappointed in what they find.

Ummm.... wow. This is perhaps the sexiest, most thoughtful album I've heard in a looooong time. Every cut is just so. Don't want to complicate this album with too many words. Just listen to the interplay of the rhythm section, her voice, and the stellar horn section. Me and my friends cannot get enough. Hell. Even my parents can get down to this. Welcome to musical heaven.

this came out in 2005?!?

too bad she had to get out of the country just to get famous, but she restored my love for music... she's the new james brown. the Goddess of Soul music.

I cannot say how much I love the natural memphis sound of this recording. First heard Stranded In Your Love on KALX last year and nearly died laughing. It expresses the sentiment of a come and go love affair with unbelievable caricature and realism. "Somebody stole ma' the door." It was one of my first songs i ever bought on iTunes. And it had 2 little skips on it. Sounded like vinyl. I let them know. They let me download it again no problem but it happened twice. Hope they fixed it! I bought the vinyl album. Do yourself a favor and at least download Stranded.

By the sound of them, you would think Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings started making funk-threaded soul music together in the 1960s. Few devotedly retro acts are as convincing. Few singers as skilled as Sharon Jones at stuffing notes with ache and meaning would be willing to invest in a sound so fully occupied by the likes of Bettye LaVette and Tina Turner in the Ike years, too. But what Jones brings to the funkified table has legs of its own -- eight of them, to be exact -- and they belong to Binky...
