Album Review

Sony’s Setlist series isn’t a standard budget-line compilation: these discs bypass hits in favor of live tracks cut throughout the years, mixing up highlights from classic live albums with a handful of rarities. In the case of Cheap Trick’s entry, this rare material is culled from the acclaimed expanded editions of Live at Budokan, Dream Police, All Shook Up, and the 1996 box set Sex, America, Cheap Trick, which means there’s nothing previously unreleased but the material is by and large cherrypicked from the band’s prime (with the notable exception of a live version of “The Flame” which is livelier than the hit version) and emphasizes quirkiness over hits, making it a pretty interesting compilation.

The Worlds Greatest Power Pop Band's strength has ALWAYS been their live shows, so it only makes sense for SONY to grab a bunch of rockers from the bands HUGE inventory of LIVE discs and make an album. SONY's SETLIST: The Very Best of Cheap Trick is a damn fine representation of what the Trick is all about.
Rick Nielsen always supplies the crunchy, loud guitars, searing riffs; likewise the man of 1000 voices Mr. Robin Zander sings like an angel one second and a crazed lunatic the next. The outstanding rhythm section consisting of Tom Petersson wielding the mighty 12 string bass guitar and drummer Bun E. Carlos' Keith Moon, meets Ginger Baker trap attack round out one of Rocks finest in what likely is America's BEST LIVE Rock'N'Roll band. What's not to like in this track listing?!!
Although four of these tracks are culled from the mighty CHEAP TRICK AT BUDOKAN the others are dug up from some excellent master tapes, as the sound & mix of them are excellent. Other than the Bob Dylan penned 'Please Mrs. Henry', and 'The Flame', the other 10 tunes are written by guitarist/songwriter extraordinaire Rick Nielsen.
America's Beatles have always found a way to make the absurd and crazy rock like a truck full of bricks with killer choruses that get stuck inside your brain and drive you insane!!

Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of the Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move. Their sound provided a blueprint for both power pop and...
