Album Review

The Crystalairs are a German doo wop quartet who began their recording career in the late 1980s. Although their vocal arrangements are highly derivative, they write most of their own material, and the odd, edgy lyrics make them sound like a familiar doo wop group that has been zapped into a parallel dimension. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing really depends on the song. It's hard to know what to think about a tune titled "By Day My Limbs, By Night My Mind," for instance, or "Here Comes the Fat Man," which contains the lines "the other day I sat down/and killed my dog and cat." The Crystalairs have an obvious love for the genre, though, and that joy of singing shines through on tracks like "She's Not Mona," a fast shuffle with an intriguing melody, if somewhat baffling lyrics. This is an album of familiar strangeness, and probably not by design. On the other hand, it is called Strange World.
