iTunes Editors’ Notes

Though there was concern that Black Sabbath would not survive without their lead singer, Ozzy Osbourne's departure actually strengthened the group. Their last few studio albums had sounded musically adrift, but with the addition of former Elf / Rainbow singer and hard rock veteran Ronnie James Dio, Sabbath refocused with their strongest set in years. "Neon Knights" announces the new attack; Dio would not be cowed into imitating his predecessor. He implements his own strident, operatic growl and the group responds with a faster, tighter sound much more in line with modern heavy metal than their own initial idiosyncratic approach. The new excitement within the group unleashes guitarist Tony Iommi's most inspired solos in years. The title track is an archetypal metal anthem. "Neon Knights," "Lady Evil" and "Wishing Well" move with a quickstep and funk previously unheard from these downward doomsters. Dio would only last for one additional studio release, 1981's excellent Mob Rules.

Dio rules

Great album - great memories - my first concert.
Ronnie will be missed - one of the best voices in heavy metal sadly silenced forever.......

A true Master Piece of Metal

RIP Ronnie, \,,/,

Probably my favorite all time Ronnie James Dio album. This Ranks quite high as Sabbath album as well.
Here Sabbath re-invents its self rising from fading ambers to be a white hot and relevant force in the new Metal scene of the day.
Still very relevant today and no signs of sounding dated. Definitely worth the purchase! \,,/,

Just got news RJD died because of stomach cancer. This is some of his best work in my metal opinion. Cherish this music and the man who did what ozzy couldn't do, give black sabbath a booming voice that matches the music. Much love Ronnie the kindest metal star you'll ever know. Rock wherever you are.

Black Sabbath have been so influential in the development of heavy metal rock music as to be a defining force in the style. The group took the blues-rock sound of late-'60s acts like Cream, Blue Cheer, and Vanilla Fudge to its logical conclusion, slowing the tempo, accentuating the bass, and emphasizing screaming guitar solos and howled vocals full of lyrics expressing mental anguish and macabre fantasies. If their predecessors clearly came out of an electrified blues tradition, Black...
