iTunes Review

While the details surrounding this collection are somewhat mysterious, it's basically a quasi-legit compilation of Nate Dogg jams assembled long after the messy demise of Death Row Records. Essentials does feature a few certified singles; "Nobody Does It Better" (featuring Warren G), "Me & My Homies" (alongside Tupac), and "Never Leave Me Alone" (with Snoop Dogg), but it's conspicuously lacking much-loved trademark hits such as "Regulate," "Where I Wanna Be," and "Ain't No Fun (If The Homies Can't Have None)." On the upside, it shines new light on several exceptional tracks from his little-heard and impossible to find debut album, 1998's G-Funk Classics Vol. 1 & 2, most notably "Because I Got A Girl" and "She's Strange." While the title may be a bit misleading, this compilation still has plenty of great tunes on it. Despite the gaps in his discography, Nate Dogg remains a one-of-a kind talent and the smoothest singer in hip-hop history. Hopefully we haven't heard the last from him.

The cousin of Snoop Dogg, Nate grew up in Long Beach, and began working with Warren early in the '90s. By 1994, the duo hit number two on the pop charts with "Regulate," from the soundtrack to Above the Rim. The two later severed their relationship, with Warren going on...
