EDITORS’ NOTES

Nirvana’s sculpted symphony of reckless guitar, bass, and drums nailgunned to some of the most oblique yet thoughtful lyrics of all time ushered in the alt-rock nation. “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “In Bloom,” “Lithium,” and “Breed” are corrosive anthems that ignited a movement, slammed shut a decade of excess, and catapulted the underground into the mainstream.

The world Pre Nirvana The world Post Nirvana

The influence of this album CANNOT be understated, simply said there were the hair bands pre Nirvana and the world after Nirvana. I can remember first hearing this albulm as a teen watching the video to Smell like Teen Spirit and watching the album set the world on fire and leave change in it's wake. For those of you old enough to remember think back to the first time you saw that video and remember the feeling you had, for those youngsters out there, I don't know if it invokes the same rage and disdain as it did in my era. Cobain was the voice for a generation of misunderstood disenchanted youth. An amazing album, an amazing band a tragic loss.

About Nirvana

Even now, years after you first felt its edges, the chorus of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” still sounds too dangerous—too loud, too ugly, too upset—for any mainstream. And yet, Nirvana’s 1991 single didn’t just mark an unlikely breakthrough for the Seattle trio, it upended popular culture in ways we’ve haven’t seen since. Punk became pop, grunge became global vernacular, industry walls became rubble, and frontman Kurt Cobain became the reluctant voice of a generation in need of catharsis, all seemingly overnight. Though his 1994 suicide would see the band dissolve just as abruptly as they’d arrived, their story is now rock’n’roll parable and their influence still felt—as punks, icons, Hall of Famers, purveyors of haunting melody and often terrifying noise.
