Reseña de álbum

A change from the beat-orientation of most Gescom material, the world's first MD-only release is a 45-track, hour-long collection of assorted ambient noise and other detritus, most of which sounds as though it came straight from Autechre's samplers with no editing to speak of. Designed to be played on a random setting (MD technology allows skips throughout a disc with no lag time), the album works quite well considering its avowed purpose. Since Gescom and Autechre have always phrased their electronics experimentation with plenty of beats though, it's difficult to take Mini Disc as anything more than a cast-off.

Excellent experimental artifact

This release was the reason why I bought my MD player. With the gapless shuffle feature of the MD, I listened to Minidisc several times through without hearing it the same way twice. I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to duplicate this effect using iTunes with the crossfade feature. Not something most people would want to listen to while driving or doing household choress, but then again, most people haven't heard of Autechre or Gescom. Musically, this depends on your definition of music. Some of it is quite lovely, other parts of it are just white noise. Some is annoying. But with the cut-and-paste playback approach, it is definitely never boring.

Perfect Timing

The beauty of this album is that it is meant to play at random, so you never hear it the same way twice. The Gescom Minidisc fell off the face of the earth when the Minidisc player died, but rightly so, since it demands gapless play-back, a feature that cd players and even mp3 players haven't been able to offer. But now that the recent iTunes 7 does feature gapless play-back, setting up a Gescom playlist to randomize in Party Shuffle works perfectly. A great experiement in textures, and sound transition.

Seems like AMG does not think too highly of...

...this excellent expirimental album. Think about it; do you always want to buy an album where you have no chice but to play the album from track #1 to the last track in order? Or do you want a chance to play an album where you can prevent alzheimer's disease by playing Gescom's famous album in a shuffled up way? Well, I would, because I want to prevent boreom and have a good time, all at the same time. I wonder who the political figure is in the album art?

Shrouded in conjecture and just a wee bit of good fun, Gescom is the more dancefloor-friendly identity of Sean Booth and Rob Brown, aka Autechre. The bulk of the pair's Gescom material (save for an EP a piece on "future funk" label Clear and David Moufang's Source label, as well as a mail-order-only 12" offered to members of the group's fanclub) has been issued through the Manchester-based experimental techno label Skam, owned and operated by occasional collaborator Andy Maddocks. Focusing on the...
