The second coming of the new world jazz composers...

"Escaping Shadows" is the masterful work, and a great follow-up to "Findings". The growth is phenomenal, with much regards to the groove-based tunes that shake up the foundation, contrary to the first album. From front to back, this album breathes adventure in a cerebral, yet dance-able fashion. The influence of Pat Metheny reigns supreme in this sophomore undertaking, with more vocal layers, synths, and various textual elements that make this through-composed style vibrant again. Tunes such as "The Final Chapter", "Five Years Later", "New Days", and "Firelight" give way to subtle rock imagery, but hang on to the substance of it's jazz base. There are even glimpses of Marvin Gaye in a very indirect manor, as some of the grooves remind me of the "What's Going On" saga. Promising and refreshing, and the future awaits for this young star to shine on the rest of the music listening audience.

Benny Reid---Escaping Shadows Album

Really enjoyed this new release, Escaping Shadows." It built upon the foundation that was set in Benny's first release, "Findings." Lots of added surprises and creative melodic tones intermixed within the tunes, each tune being quite different. This album, fused with varied styles and atmospheric and contemporary jazz numbers has roots in the Post-Bop genre. It is influenced by Stan Getz, Charlie Parker and Pat Metheny and at the same time, is original in its approach.

Reid's music with an obvious guitar influence uses a distortion sound, like in "Cutting," which is quite unique. My favorite piece, "Firelight," took me to heaven with the way it grabs you and builds to a crescendo with a nice hook. Each piece has its unique reference and can be enjoyed for its distinguished characteristics on its own. This album, with its smooth jazz with pizazz fusion/rock, was much more than I expected.
