Adult Nights

Adult Nights

Adult Nights is the earnest and ambitious debut release by the New Hampshire-based band Wild Light. Their melancholic indie rock/folk-pop sounds comfortably familiar, with crisp guitar hooks, glossy keyboards, and an instinctive feel for dramatic tension. The album features a slew of catchy mid-tempo songs, notably “California On My Mind,” “Canyon City,” and “Heart Attack,” that cover ground somewhere between self pity and angst, with soaring harmonies and big sing-along choruses (three of the four members ably share vocal duties). There are multiple references to their native state and their adopted one of California (or at least the place where they recorded the album) and the gulf that exists between the two, whether musically or metaphorically, is all over these songs. From the pleasing backing vocals of “The Party (Oh, My God!)” to the aching “Call Home,” Adult Nights is a charming and enjoyable first release.
