Album Review

The Lucy Show's second full-length album caught the group in a time of personnel crises. At this juncture, the band had dwindled to a duo, Rob Vandeven and Mark Bandola, with assistance from various sidemen. Despite the membership instability here, this album is a solid improvement over previous releases. The influence of R.E.M. and the Cure is extremely strong; all the songs here show clear touches of one or both of these bands. A few selections, such as "Sun and Moon" and "Melody," also utilize subtle 1960s melodic twists and turns. Unusual, slip-sliding chord progressions occur often ("View From the Outside" is a good example), lending these songs added depth and appeal. "New Message" features a solid, chunky drumbeat and an especially ringing arrangement that is accentuated by use of crisscrossed high trumpet lines. "Sojourn's End" has noticeable psychedelic touches and adds a smidgen of harmonica to the mix. "Sad September" is a moody and lovely acoustic guitar-dominated number with a hauntingly effective vocal. And the synthesizer-based "Part of Me Now" is simultaneously pulsating and expressive, one of the album's best songs. This overlooked release deserves wider exposure and is well worth hearing.

I wore the cassette out by the early 90's after many, many years of pure enjoyment. I have spent the last 10 years hoping they would put out a CD to replace the impossible to find cassette. Turn down the lights, grab a beer and sit back and experience a great, great band that died out well before their time!

Waiting for years...

I had managed to keep my cassette of this intact until about 2001, and then I no longer had a working tape player! My poor, poor cassette was no longer playable. I've had the album on vinyl since it's release, but I can't even remember when I last owned a functional turntable. I've been looking for the CD for ages - anxiously awaiting alerts from Djangos - but never having any luck. I'm even more plussed that buying this album provides more tracks than the original LP! One of my favorites from the 80's that's going to be in heavy rotation on my iPod for a while now!

A great band that flew under the radar...

I never dreamed that we would see this re-issued, but what we really need is a re-issue of "Undone" their 1st record, which was never released on CD
