An unknown gem...

My sister first purchased this album in 2000 when we visited the Bay Area and spent some five hours in Amoeba Records. I have never seen it available anywhere else accept through Mehldau's website and now here on Itunes. [Another volume of this available, and it appears it contains the rest of this nights live set, but the ballads from the evening; interesting how they were split up for release]. What I find interesting about this recording is that it shows Brad Mehldau at the beginning of his career, just before the string of Art of the Trio releases were going to appear. So here, you learn about Mehldau's abilities in a quartet format, his strengths as an improvisor and his talents at comping and pushing melodies along. While Mehldau would not want to hear the comparison, on this recording his playing most strongly emulates Ahmad Jamal. The way he backs the others, the way he fills space, the way in which he plays almost percussively at times, and even errs on the side of melodic flow rather than dissonance, all remind me of Jamal. The other players here are great as well, though nothing earth shattering. That being said, Mehldau fans will find this release illuminating and great in a straight ahead, hard bop way; great for a drive along the coast or a nice dinner party. Though there is enough intriguing improvisation to prevent it from being nothing more than background music.

Though Mehldau's training is primarily classical, his interest in jazz began early. He played in the Hall High School jazz band of Hartford, Connecticut, winning the Berklee College of Music's...
