I think of Nicolas Gombert, with his deep, lush, full-textured sonorities, as the Brahms of the Renaissance. Although Flemish, he worked as choir-master for Emperor Charles V in Spain for much of his career, and I hear in his music some of the dark melancholy that seems to me part of the nation's character. The Hilliard Ensemble's performance strikes me as perfectly right for this music. Not sure there's much point in anyone else's doing it again.
