their best yet!

We wait and wait for new records from Elysian Fields, like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. "Unwrapping" The Afterlife is the perfect present, and the listener is endlessly rewarded. I think this could be a near perfect album, and is probably my favorite. The moods are lush and dreamy, and sometimes a bit trippy and way deep. The lyrics are like poetry, and many of the songs are so moving. This is a very romantic album as well! My favorite songs are Climbing My Dark Hair (like a sad fairy tale), How We Die (life affirming and beautiful), Where Can We Go But Nowhere (soaring romanticism), Night Melody of the Pull (longing, filled with desire and ache), Ashes in Winter Light (duet reflecting back on a relationship. you will cry). But actually, I love all the songs. Listening puts me in another world, a world I don't want to have to ever wake up from. They make amazing music! Get this for everyone on your itunes Christmas list! They'll thank you forever.

Fortunately Climbing my dark hair provides that diamond shining amongst the mundane, and luckily, you can purchase just that very diamond without the extra bagage.

The music is neither as mainstream as Cowboy Junkies nor as doom-obsessed as Mazzy Star, with cameos by noted New York downtown music mavens John Lurie and Marc Ribot. The band's sophomore album Bleed Your Cedar was produced by Steve Albini, but during this time the band's...
