Piano master Oscar Peterson's most popular album emerged from intense 1962 recording sessions with sizzling drummer Ed Thigpen and superbly swinging bassist Ray Brown. Sounding so casually profound, you wouldn't know they were gigging all night and recording all day, the trio knock jam-session standards like Duke Ellington's title track and Milt Jackson's "Bags’ Groove" out of the park, before ending with Peterson's gospel-heavy "Hymn to Freedom." Made refreshingly concise in hopes of attracting radio play, these tracks speak volumes.
I owned this album LP. It was the first trio that sounds like a full band, each player was going at full steam, Oscar Peterson, piano, Ray Brown, Bass and Ed Thigpen, Drums. I now own the CD and it sounds just as good, no great. You can't go wrong buying this jazz classic. I agree that all the standards are wonderful, but the last track holds a special; place. It was written and performed during the Civil Rights movement. You can hear the power wash over. Just thinking about where we are today makes this music for any true jazz lover.
Oscar Peterson, heaven is enjoying your brilliance on the ivory now. Sir, I thank you for the PURE GOLD you left us with!
Night Train - Oscar Peterson Trio
Fantastic album! I could listen to this forever! Well, maybe not forever, but for a long time without getting tired of it. This is REAL music! They make more music than some larger groups; and, it doesn't drive you away. Actually, this is a great album to fall asleep to! It relaxes you! While the therapeutic value may not have been the original intention, it's great to relax to after a hectic day. Well worth getting! I may have to download it on a different phone, so I can use this one as originally intended. You can't go wrong here! 😎
