iTunes Review

Nightflight is a welcome return for Brisbane, Australia’s Kate Miller-Heidke, who took three years off between albums. Her fourth opens strongly with “Ride This Feeling,” a soaring slice of optimistic pop forged on a foundation of piano and a driving rhythm section that propels her gently ascending vocals. As someone who began singing as an operatically trained lead soprano, Miller-Heidke exercises a lot of restraint here and throughout Nightflight. With laser-like vocal precision, songs like “Sarah” stand out with self-sung harmonies layered over dramatic arrangements, recalling some of Kate Bush’s more magical moments. But Miller-Heidke also infuses her songs with riveting narratives and stories that one would normally have to mine for in old country songs. She sings about traveling alone in the beautifully melancholic title track. With lyrics like “If one more person coughs on me I'm gonna punch them in the face/Mind the gap between what I say and how I act,” it’s easily her most vulnerable musing thus far. “Fire and Iron” closes with some haunting folk perfection.

Great Music and Atmosphere

The music is moody and lifting and combines with great story telling.
Her Opera training shines through on occasions.
Kate's voice reminds me of Judie Tzuke but that is three decades ago!
Buy it.

Beautiful, haunting, and AMAZING. A must buy.

I've been a huge fan of Kate Miller-Heidke since a friend brought back her Curiouser album from an Australian music festival, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on this new album. (I pre-ordered the import from Australia because I couldn't wait for the US to catch up.)
This album certainly delivers. It's got great story-telling, beautiful and haunting lyrics that will send chills down your spine, and Kate's amazing vocals-- that fine line she's got with her operatic training and her quirky pop voice is fabulous.
I was addicted to the beauty of the song "Nightflight" before really picking up on the lyrics (all about traveling, and traveling without the one you love). Seriously, only Kate can make the lyric "And if one more person coughs on me, I'm going to punch them in the face" sound so gorgeous.
Speculation that the story being told in "Sarah" is based on true events makes that song even more powerful.
The covers of her own Fatty Gets a Stylist / Liberty Bell numbers, "Let Me Fade" and "The Tiger Inside Will Eat the Child," are so delicious. Even listening to both versions and knowing they are both KMH, it's hard to believe it isn't two different people. The versions on Nightflight are really magnificent. "Let Me Fade" may be my favorite song on the album.

This album is a bit darker and less quirky than Curiouser, but it's still ridiculously fabulous. I highly recommend purchasing it.
And if you get the chance to see her live (she's touring the US June/July of 2012), do it. It's one of the most amazing shows I've ever been to, even when it's just her and Keir. I've converted a number of friends to fans after taking them to one of her concerts. Amazing, amazing, amazing.

Nothing else to say, this album is stunning.

Kate Miller-Heidke was fully trained as a lead opera vocalist -- soprano -- and was ready to go into a career of Gilbert & Sullivan roles when pop music beckoned. She has since become a piano-playing singer/songwriter in the Kate Bush mold, popular for her theatricality, mixture of folk and pop, and the touches of comic opera she inserts into her songs. As a young girl, Miller-Heidke would charge her family five cents for household performances. It was a long way from there to her position as a darling...
