Editors’ Notes

With 2010’s The Magician’s Private Library, Detroit-bred Holly Miranda resumes the solo career she abandoned to become a member of the Jealous Girlfriends. For her re-entrance into the single life, she’s enlisted producer Dave Sitek from TV On the Radio. Sitek drapes these songs in a multitude of approaches and sounds until Miranda nearly disappears in the production fog. It’s not such a bad place for Miranda to be. It allows tunes such as “Joints” and “Waves” to float past as ethereal dreams (three tracks reference sleep or dreams in their title) where the echo, reverbs and hazy shades of backing musicians coalesce into a blurry forest of sound. Miranda’s voice slips in and out of the mix, leaving plenty of sonic holes for Sitek to fill with synthesizers, strings and samples. When she does appear, it’s for creepy and crazy whoops of romantic rapture and mystical ecstasy that resemble a tightly wound Mazzy Star. “High Tide,” with its ‘70s-styled electric pianos, is an alluring highlight.

Customer Reviews

Great talent, disappointing album

Holly has a wonderful, thunderous voice...but you wouldn't know it if you listened to her first solo release. If you've heard her live, then you will most likely be disappointed with this album. I saw her live the week before the release and was so impressed I downloaded it the first day. I barely recognized the songs though because the album is way, way overproduced. This should be expected with a pop princess with no talent, but her voice is exceptional and songwriting is solid. Sadly it's all been buried under horns, synth, jingle bells (really!!), a drum machine and more horns. thought I accidently downloaded a chuck mangione album at one point. Whoever produced this should never be allowed near a mixing board again. They did Holly (and her fans) a disservice. I would say save your money and see her live instead but...even the shadow of Holly that appears here is better than most.

Um, best album ever?

Perhaps not. But it's pretty amazing and ma savy fave.
Admittedly, I prefer her music live, but well done, lady, well done.
The customer is srsly satisfied.

Amazing live

Saw her in concert yesterday with tegan and sara, soooo amazing. SUch a beautiful voice..and the rest of the band is extremely talented.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Although initially known for her work with the Jealous Girlfriends, Holly Miranda launched her own career several years before the band’s formation. Raised in the suburbs of Detroit, she dropped out of high school at the age of 16 and moved to New York, where she finished her degree through correspondence courses and landed a record deal with BMG. Her debut album for the label was never released, however, and Miranda eventually left BMG’s roster. Now an independent musician, she made her proper debut...
