A More Polished, Focused Manson

"No Reflection" takes us back to what we love Marilyn Manson for: A heavy, thrashy, and in-your-face foot-stomp-romp full of aggression and polish. With The High End of Low, Manson gave us a raw, un-hinged production that proved to be great for some and disheartening for others. If "No Reflection" is any indication of a fiered-up Manson ready to blow away fans and put nay-sayers in their place, then Born Villain may be setting itself up to be Manson's best album since 2004's Golden Age of Grotesque.

People stuck in the past can continue with their routined argument of Manson "not being how he was during the Antichrist Superstar or Holy Wood eras," but for those who can understand that Manson is an evolving artist (and understand that living 15 years in the past is unreasonable), this single serves as both a treat for the ears and the hate anthem that the last album didn't seem to provide.

As a long-time fan who has kept an open mind for the band's consistent change in sound within each album, for better or for worse, this isn't a 5-star review plagued by fanatic "I don't care what it sounds like" fanboyism. This is a long-time fan recognizing that this is the new sound of Manson - and it works.

Love him or hate him, the self-proclaimed "Antichrist Superstar" — Marilyn Manson — was indisputably among the most notorious and controversial entertainers of the 1990s. Celebrated by supporters as a crusader for free speech and denounced by detractors as little more than a poor man's Alice Cooper, Manson was the latest in a long line of shock rockers, rising to the top of the charts on a platform of sex, drugs, and Satanism. Though widely dismissed by critics, his brand of metal nevertheless...
