Album Review

One of the band's biggest-selling albums, the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra scores greatly with talented vocalists Héctor Tricoche and Paquito Acosta. In spite of salsa's great change of fashion, the seasoned orchestra manages to combine the high sense of style and swing with the expected romantic content. Arrangers Máximo Torres, Cuto Soto, and Olivencia veteran Angel "Pajai" Torres ensure that the overall energetic style of the band takes first chair. "Lobo Domesticado" (sung by Tricoche) is one of the band's most notorious hits, but buoyant tunes like "No Me Tires la Primera Piedra," "Volveré," and "Lápiz de Carmín" (performed by Acosta) are equally wonderful. One of the band's most important albums, and after three decades of foundation, Tommy Olivencia and his powerful outfit keep going strong. ~ José A. Estévez, Jr., Rovi

Review: 30 Aniversario

Tommy Olivencia did many wonderful records so it's hard where to place this one. It is by far, one of his best cd's ever. Remember, he also did a couple of excellent records with Chamaco Ramirez and Frankie Ruiz. This cd contains the best songs performed by still-going-today Hector Tricoche and Paquito Acosta. Originally released in 1987, when I heard this cd in its entirety, I,just a little kid, became obsessed with it and right away bought it. My favorite tune is the great "El Santero", a fast moving salsa talking about religious beliefs and jokes. Tricoche performed it well. Next, is a short mix named "Medley Aniversario" in which several of his classics were efficiently mixed together. The great Paquito Acosta sang "Contigo Es Distinto", a fine tune. All packed closely together, "No Tires La Primera Piedra, Lapiz De Carmin, the super popular "Lobo Domesticado" and "Senora" are all super hits of Tommy. The one heard the least by me was "Volvere", in which I'm sure one million people disagree with me. The song "Lobo Domesticado" is still being played today at any salsa night clubs or even house parties. That's how popular that song is. The "Universal Music Latino" music company did a heck of a job in remastering the sound of this cd. The original cd sounds a lot lower and was discontinued because ThRodven went out of business. That was horrible when that happened, a lot of good music was recorded for this poorly managed music record company. Buy this cd if you haven't already!!!
