iTunes Review

If DJ Shadow ever aspired to be the Ennio Morricone of beatmakers, The Mountain Will Fall shows he’s already there—innovating and executing with style and precision. The album consolidates the Northern California DJ's many personas—found-sound scion, musical adventurer, rap DJ—into a cohesive whole. Run the Jewels runs riot over Shadow’s blueprints on the political “Nobody Speak.” He puts it down for his home state on “California,” uncoiling bass like a cobra striking in slo-mo. “Ashes to Oceans” is the album’s signature beat suite that stands among his best—conveying emotion and drama with the deftness of a classical conductor.

What it is makes it fantastic; what it isn't makes it refreshing.

He definitely leveraged the range of sounds and samples at his disposal. Each song is distinct and there are some real instrumental gems in here; Ashes to Oceans comes to mind. I will be listening to this for a long time. Much like Private Press, I think this one will stand the test. Its sound and rhythm doesn't seem as tied to the present trends and time as some other recent, highly anticipated electronic releases, which are sometimes dominated by wubs and drops.
Overall, very pleased with the range and depth. Feels a spiritual successor to Private Press.

thank you!

can't wait for this to drop! thank you for continuing to dig and produce... ❤️

Bring it

Hate to do this as the album hasn't been released yet, but the opening track is awesome. Shadow has caught some flack in the past for experimenting outside the realm of Endtroducing, Pre-emptive Strike and The Private Press.
Facts are: he isn't gonna be what he was. No one ever is. However, a leopard doesn't change his spots.
I'm happy to hear the opening track.
Sounds like the old Shadow is moving on and staying true to what he was at the same time. Like it, buy it, love it, breath it.

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

DJ Shadow's Josh Davis is widely credited as a key figure in developing the experimental instrumental hip-hop style associated with the London-based Mo' Wax label. His early singles for the label, including "In/Flux" and "Lost and Found (S.F.L.)," were all-over-the-map mini-masterpieces combining elements of funk, rock, hip-hop, ambient, jazz, soul, and used-bin finds. Although he'd already done a scattering of original and production work (during 1991-1992 for Hollywood Records) by the time Mo'...
